FORMAL plans have been submitted to convert a Hereford pub which has been vacant for more than 10 years into flats.

Herefordshire Housing is proposing to build 35 new flats – 19 affordable and 16 market rent – on the site of The Ship Inn on Cross Street and Ross Road, Hereford.

In a design and access statement accompanying the application, Herefordshire Housing said the development is designed specifically for the site and promotes 'contemporary, sustainable living'.

It is the latest development led by the housing firm in the South Wye area, with a multi-million pound programme of improvement and regeneration in the Oval area well under way.

The new development, if approved, would comprise of 20 two-bedroomed flats and 15 one-bedroomed flats.

A total of 26 parking spaces would be provided as part of the scheme, with the proposal aimed at creating a 'positive land mark' in the area.

A spokesman for Herefordshire Housing said: "We are committed to proving Herefordshire with high quality homes and creating communities.

"We have now submitted planning permission for the Ship Inn site. "It is our intention to improve the area and create homes and a community for the future".
