HATTIE Butterworth, an 18-year-old cellist from Orcop is the winner of this year's Hereford Police Male Choir’s young musician's £1000 bursary and has already earmarked it to pay for a two-week summer music school in Switzerland.
A former pupil ay Kingstone High School, Hattie is now a student at the Chetham School of Music in Manchester and has won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London from September. She plays with several orchestras, including the National Schools Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Chamber Orchestra, and has toured with her own quartet.
The bursary, sponsored by the Becket Bulmer Fund (managed by Herefordshire Community Foundation) was established by the police choir nine years ago to help young musicians like Hattie develop a career in music.
The other candidates taking part in the adjudications at Holy Trinity Church, Hereford were Joel Starkie (piano); Sam Saunders (baritone); William Hewitt (drums); Raye Harvey (violin) ;India George; (cello); Gil Richards (piano) and Joe Moore (baritone).
