THE A49 at the Callow has been reopened following a crash involving a Land Rover with a trailer carrying sheep.

Ambulance staff who attended the crash on the A49 this morning said: “How no-one was killed is astonishing.”

Police are directing traffic after being called at 9.20am to a three-vehicle crash.

It is affecting traffic between King's Thorn and Hereford.

The crash between the Land Rover, silver BMW and a silver Honda Civic is just past the Grafton Inn as you are travelling away from Hereford.

Police, fire and ambulance are attending and also a vet.

The driver of the Civic was released by firefighters and suffered a leg fracture.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The man driving the Civic was severely trapped.  Excellent teamwork from ambulance staff and firefighters enabled the man to be treated as the car was being cut away to get the man out.

“He suffered a nasty fracture to his leg.  After pain relief from the doctor, he was removed from the car, immobilised and had his leg splinted.  After further assessment, he was taken by land ambulance to Hereford County Hospital.”

The spokesman said a trailer carrying sheep ended up on the roof of the BMW.

The Land Rover Defender that had been pulling the trailer had serious front end damage.

The Honda Civic was against the hedge at the side of the road with significant damage.

A woman and a three-year-old boy who had also been travelling in the Civic were taken to the same hospital as a precaution, but appeared uninjured.

A 41-year-old mother and two young children, aged one and five, in the BMW were able to get out of the car unaided.

Other than being badly shaken by the incident, they were unhurt.  They were assessed by the doctor but did not require any further treatment and were discharged at the scene.

The spokesman added: “The man driving the Land Rover was also assessed at scene but was again uninjured.

“Unfortunately, a number of the sheep being carried in the trailer had to be put down at the scene.

“Given the nature of the crash and where the vehicles ended up, it is extraordinary that the levels of injury were not more serious.”

Two fire crews attended from Hereford and one from Ewyas Harold

Firefighters released one casualty from a car. They also moved 20 sheep from the trailer to a place of safety.

Diversions are in place.
