A COPY of a world-famous medieval map which is housed at Hereford Cathedral has been exploring new frontiers.

Today Major Tim Peake, the British astronaut currently in the International Space Station, has tweeted about the Mappa Mundi - a map of the world dating back to around 1300.

Alongside a photograph of a copy of the historic map, Major Peake wrote: "A copy of one of the oldest maps in Britain, now exploring the newest frontier here in space #mappamundi"

Hereford Times:

Canon Chris Pullin, Chancellor of Hereford Cathedral, said: "We are absolutely thrilled about our special link with Major Tim.

"It was great to have met him at NASA in Houston in 2014 and even more wonderful to remain in touch with him in space.

"The Mappa Mundi is a view of the earth from the heavens and Tim can compare it to what he can see from space.

"People in 1300, when the map was drawn, were as interested in what the earth looked like and what could be learnt about it as we are today."
