A NICE entry of steers but more could have been sold on the trade. To include all shapes, sizes and quality the steers averaged an impressive 193p/kg topping at 248p/kg and £1200/head for a 575kg Limousin steer from D J Havard and Co, Little Lodge Farm. The top 20 prices were all in excess of £1000/head and they averaged £850/head throughout. Meat and quality still selling to a premium and plenty more could have been sold on the trade.

The heifers were just as dear averaging 193p/kg topping at 232p/kg. A lovely run of smaller, younger heifers were 210p-230p/kg all day. Heifers topped at £1095 with the top 20 prices all over £940/head. An excellent trade throughout with a ring full of buyers forward ensuring terrific competition throughout. More cattle needed at the next sale to satisfy the demand here at Hereford.

Bulls: A smaller entry of feeding bulls sold to an excellent trade especially on those younger continental types! Those younger, shapelier types would be 220p/kg all day long. More needed next sale.

Cows and calves - 23: A selective and varied entry of cows and calves forward but nonetheless sold to a very fast trade. Cows and calves up to £1360/head. Younger outfits in plenty of demand with plenty of farmers around the ring looking. Please let us know early if you wish to enter any over the forthcoming sales.

Barren cows - 6: A small entry of cull cows sold to an improved trade averaging 119p/kg up to 127p/kg. Those meated and framed sorts are in strongest demand topping at £1070/head. It would seem as though there is a shortage of cows about and more are desperately needed in two weeks' time.
