TWENTY jobs have been created in a border town after a supermarket makeover costing £710,000.

The Co-operative food store in Hay-on-Wye is set to revamped this month with the introduction of a free home delivery service for customers spending over £25 on groceries.

The scheme allows members of the community to do their shopping in store but removes the challenge of carrying it home by delivering the groceries to the door at a time to suit.

The majority of the supermarket revamp will be undertaken out-of-hours to minimise inconvenience for customers at the Newport Street store – which officially re-launches on February 26.

There will be a temporary closure between February 21 and 23, when a Co-op pop-up shop will continue to serve the community with over 120 lines of its popular grocery products.

As part of the makeover new refrigeration will be installed to enhance and increase its range of chilled meat, dairy, beers, wines and, frozen products. A new local deli and bakery range will also be introduced.

Mark Jones, manager of store, said: “It is a fantastic way to start the year.

"With 20 retail roles created and a more than £710,000 investment to transform the store it really is an exciting time for the whole team.

“The Co-op is investing to transform its stores and deliver consistently great shopping experiences for customers, this sits alongside great new product development and fresh new ranges - we really are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new into their new-look local store.”

The store will also re-launch its community pioneer role where members of the food store team, Colin Edwards and Gareth Ratcliffe, will work to build involvement in community activities and support for the British Red Cross, the Co-op’s new charity partnership.
