THE Friends of St Michael & All Angels Kingsland, known as SMAAAK, present a large scale exhibition on the universal theme of 'The Light' as part of the ongoing fundraising needed to preserve its beautiful Grade 1 listed 13th century church.

Curated by Kingsland-based artist Charles MacCarthy, the show will feature works by more than 50 professional local artists across a variety of media.

"Perhaps we take light too much for granted," Charles observes. "Certainly when there is a power cut on a winter evening we are made aware of that. Light is not all of one kind, it comes in many different forms and we are sensitive to those forms and very much affected by them.

Apart from its physical manifestations light has meaning on deeper levels - we talk about enlightenment.

The aim of this exhibition is to celebrate the myriad ways in which light appears - from the purely physical to the metaphorical.

"Following the success of The Company of Heaven art show held in 2013, we have had a hugely enthusiastic response from a range of exceptional artists including Wally Gilbert, Ken Eastman, Mike Clements, Stella Hidden, Allen Fisher, Meg Ellis, Susie Cawley, Julienne Braham, Dan McCarthy, Alison McGregor Grimley, Jane Tudge, Nicky Hopwood, Maggie Jones, Robert Wood and David England.

"We are fortunate to have artists representing a wide range of media including painting, sculpture and prints as well as stained glass, light boxes and light projections. We are particularly pleased to be able to showcase video and digital media from artists such as Rebecca Farkas and Lois Hopwood which adds a totally new and exciting dimension to the show".

The Light runs at Kingsland Church opens on Saturday and runs until Sunday, December 13. Open daily from 10am to 4pm. Free entry.
