STUDENTS at a North Herefordshire high school got in touch with their inner 'sandwich artist' to take third place in a business challenge set by Subway.

Tied into the national curriculum, the design a sub competition asked teams to compete to create the best marketing campaign and business plan around a new sub, based on the theme of ‘#SocialSubs’.

The designs had to be both a healthier choice and nutritious sandwich option, created for the Subway brand’s low fat subs range.

More than 80 schools from across the region entered and a team made up of Jordan Beatson, Matthew Morris and Nathan Priday from Wigmore High School was chosen as one of six finalists.

Their ‘cheeky chicken’ sub, consisting of chicken breast, lettuce, cucumber and onions on Italian white bread, was pitched to a Dragon's Den style judging panel at Birmingham City Football Club.

They came third but didn't leave empty-handed, picking up a share of £500 of Apple vouchers.

Vikki Avery, business studies teacher at Wigmore High School, said: "The students really enjoyed taking part in the challenge.

"It gave them a tangible experience of how business works and the skills needed to make see a project through to fruition. They did fantastic job."

The overall competition was won by Blue Coat Church of England School & Music College from Coventry for their ‘hot rafter’ sub.
