RESULTS from a Healthwatch survey have shown that children in Herefordshire have a high dentist attendance compared to the national average.

Healthwatch Herefordshire (HWH) asked year six pupils to complete surveys across the county and calculated the figures based on their responses.

Only two percent said they had never attended the dentist.

This compares to figures from the RCS faculty of Dental Health who said as many as 30 percent of children in England had not seen an NHS dentist between 2012-2014.

HWH, the consumer champion for health and social care services in the county, conducted the survey as part of its Crucial Crew event.

Children were asked about looking after their teeth and where to go for help in a number of health scenarios.

Overall, the proportion of children brushing their teeth twice a day was high at 91.2 percent and under half of children surveyed tried to avoid eating too many sugary things in order to look after their teeth.

Paul Deneen, independent chair of HWH said: "It is important for this generation and future ones that key health messages are getting to children at a young age, including those about looking after your teeth and where to go for help."

The Crucial Crew event is an engagement fortnight with year six pupils.

The full report and results will be sent to agencies and commissioners of health and social care services about catchment areas of Herefordshire.
