MONTAGUE Harris and Company recently held the annual show and sale of Talybont Welsh Mountain Rams at their market ground at Talybont-on-Usk on October 3. An entry of 348 rams met with a clearance of 94%, with rams averaging at 614 guineas. The sale was extremely well attended with buyers from all parts of Wales, the Border counties and buyers even in attendance from as far afield as Cornwall.

The champion ram was bred and shown by G.E. and A. Tay, Penfathor-uchaf, Ystradfellte, who received the Charles Barnes Perpetual Challenge Cup and sold the ram for 5,500 guineas to the judges, Rhydian and Bryn Williams of Gellidaefalog Farm, Penderyn. Second prize in the Yearling group was for a ram shown by Robert Davies of the Pyrgad Farm, Llangynidr, with third prize again going to G.E. and A. Tay. In the Two Year Old and Over section the first prize was awarded to Robert Davies of the Pyrgad Farm, Llangynidr who sold a three year old ram at 1,500 guineas. Second prize was awarded to I. Greenow and Son, Blaenau-Mawr Farm, Cwmdu with third prize again going to Robert Davies. J.J. Greenow and Sons of Penyworlod Farm, Llanthony were just behind the Champion with an outstanding Yearling selling to 5,000 guineas. In all some 37 rams sold at over 1,000 guineas with 17 of those selling between 2,000 and 3,600 guineas.

It was without doubt an exceptional show of rams and there were some very notable prices. G.E. and A. Tay of Penfathor-uchaf sold a run of 20 rams to average at 1,169 guineas. Robert Davies of the Pyrgad sold to 2,600 guineas with several sheep selling in excess of 2,000 and with a run of 45 averaging at 814 guineas. Howell Davies of Perthygwynion Farm, Rhyd-y-Fro, Pontardawe sold to 3,600 guineas with a run of 20 rams averaging at 717 guineas. J.J. Greenow of Penyworlod Farm, Llanthony sold 5,000 guineas to average at 653 guineas. G. Davies, Bwlch-y-Waun Farm, sold to 2,400 guineas, averaging a run of 29 rams at 632 guineas. Dai Horrell of Danyrhadwy Farm, Vaynor sold to 1,500 guineas with a run of 9 averaging at 654 guineas. I. and W. Jones, Upper Rheol, Erwood sold to 2,000 guineas with a run of eight averaging at 644 guineas. D.P. and K.R. Mantle, Glaisfer Isaf sold to 3,000 with a run of 30 averaging at 553 guineas. D.R. Williams, Gellidaefalog, Penderyn sold for 3,000 with a run of 10 averaging 787 guineas. Ian Tay, Penfathor-uchaf sold rams to 1,800 guineas, Julian Rees, The Fedw, Llangattock to 1,500 guineas and I. Greenow and Son, Blaenau-Mawr to 1,200 guineas.
