BELL BANK CLUB - September started with a quiz devised by John Price consisting of music, general knowledge and guessing the voices of famous people. It took Dorothy a while to recognise the voice of her own father, Joe Davis, the world famous snooker player, which made us laugh.

Later in the month we enjoyed watching films of past concerts which members of Bell Bank had participated in. This included Jan Golding’s concert and a ‘This is your life’ of Nell Chillingford (known as ‘Chilli’). She started the club over 23 years ago. We listened to the song Eileen composed about her charity gliding ride. She has such a beautiful voice and she was so brave to undertake such a feat.

Judith treated us to more relaxation and exercises and read us some lovely poems by the Hay writers.

On September 24 we visited the Honey Cafe at Bronllys on a beautiful sunny day and enjoyed the food and the beautiful views.

If you have any kind of sight problem we would love for you to join us. We meet every Thursday from 2-4pm in the parish hall in H a y.

A most enjoyable afternoon was had by those present.

The Cogan Cup ,which is awarded for drama and related aspects, was keenly contested by WIs within Herefordshire on September 21. Jenny Hare, our president, led our team of Jane Jenkins, Margaret Jones, Sue Patmore and Frances Riddell.

Holmer presented a view of childhood based on popular children’s literature with comedic and poignant additions, written by Jenny. After summing up, the adjudicator announced that Holmer had won the competition.

Team members and supporters cheered and happily received the trophy, which will be in our possession for the next two years.

The subject of our October meeting talk was The History of Berrington Hall Architecture and was led by Dr Frank Ryding, a doctor at the County Hospital and archivist at Berrington Hall. The hall is a National Trust property about three miles north east of Leominster. It was designed in the, then, latest neo-classical style which had evolved out of many earlier styles of architecture by Henry Holland, son-in- law of Capability Brown who landscaped the grounds. It was completed in 1783, having been commissioned by wealthy banker and entrepreneur Thomas Harley.

The exterior was constructed from the local red sandstone, while the interior is very highly decorated with delicate plasterwork, mouldings and artwork, all in the latest fashion of the day.

The rooms are perfectly proportioned, with the hall being sensitively situated in the rolling landscape with spectacular, far-reaching views from all sides. Frank was given a very big round of applause from members and guests alike. Holmer WI will meet next on November 6 in Holmer Parish Hall adjacent to the church at 7.30pm.
