A WHALE which was stored in Knighton in a large freezer has now been moved to be the focus of a new ITV documentary.

FM Caine and Sons in Powys picked the 31-foot whale up from Scotland earlier this year when it died after being caught in ropes.

It was brought back to Knighton to be stored in specialised containers until it was needed for an ITV documentary with presenter Ben Fogle at the helm.

The whale was transported by one of the company directors Matthew Caine last week to north Devon.

He said: "It was great to be part of this exciting project and I thank Big Wave productions for giving us this opportunity.

"We have had so many people asking us about the whale and we are all looking forward to seeing the finished production.

"Driving down the motorway to Devon it was very strange seeing all the other lorries and none of them knowing I was carrying a huge whale. I really hope we will get the opportunity in the future to do something like this again”.

The carcass will be used to find out what creatures are around the UK coastline, with the suggestion that great white sharks may be found in UK waters.

It is believed to be the first whale-fall experiment to take place in the UK, recreating what happens when a whale drops to the bottom of the ocean once it dies.

The whale carcass, a female humpback weighing more than seven tons, will be dragged through the Celtic Deep, between Ireland and Wales, with cameras filming the response from marine life, including sharks.

The documentary is expected to air on ITV sometime next year.
