CONCERNED Hereford residents are calling for action to be taken on an area they say is plagued by litter, broken glass and even dirty needles.

The fields off Yazor Road are popular with dog walkers but residents say that it is also being used by people as a space to drink alcohol and that dangerous objects are being left behind.

One resident, Gill Fletcher, was left to pay a veterinary bill of £160 after her dog, Buddy, cut his paw twice on glass during a single month.

She said: "It's disgusting. All the rubbish is getting left and the mower comes along and cuts the field and it's shredding the cans and the glass.

"Dogs have had their paws cut. Children play in the brook as well and it really is a smashing place we are so lucky to have it it's right on the doorstep. It's just a shame this is spoiling it,"

Mrs Fletcher, 48, said residents need support and an alcohol ban could be one measure of deterring people from using the area for drinking.

She said she is happy to take part in litter picks but other issues, including broken glass and needles, need to be addressed.

A spokesman for Herefordshire Council said it had not been made aware of anti-social behaviour at Yazor Brook, but would advise the public to report any anti-social behaviour to the police on the 101 non-emergency number.

"Last week, Balfour Beatty Living Places (BBLP) on behalf of Herefordshire Council, carried out work to cover offensive graffiti on one of the vandalised trees. There are no plans to remove the graffiti as this would cause further damage to the trees," the spokesman said.

"BBLP conducts weekly litter picks at the areas of Yazor Brook owned by the council."

"If the public comes across any glass or discarded needles, this should be reported to BBLP by calling 01432 261800.

"The council has no immediate plans to install further bins at the location as the current provision is sufficient if used correctly," the spokesman added.
