Fownhope

FOWNHOPE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN - The Parish Council has approved the second draft of the plan after a lengthy period of public consultation, taking on board comments from 48 individuals and organisations. The revised plan reflects changes to government planning and housing policy and to the Herefordshire Core Strategy. The plan seeks to ensure a supply of new homes for local people, and make up the shortfall of smaller homes. The plan provides for some housing growth to meet county and national requirements but development will be small-scale, and phased over the next 16 years. Stress is made on Fownhope’s place within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where government policies insist that development does not detract from that natural beauty. Common Hill will be designated as an ‘area of special character’. The plan includes details of views and buildings particularly valued by local residents which will need to be respected when development is under consideration. There are policies to support local business including village services, generate local energy, and protect green spaces within the village.

Fownhope Community Trust would be set up help to ensure that local homes remain available to meet local needs.

The plan has been produced by a steering group of Fownhope residents with advice from an experienced independent planner, Bill Bloxsome. Details of the plan will be on show at an exhibition in the Memorial Hall on Saturday from 11.15am till 5pm, and on Sunday from 2pm till 5pm. This will be followed by a further six-week period for public comments which will be managed by Herefordshire planners. The plan will then be examined by an independent examiner, and will then be put to a referendum of local voters. The exhibition is open to residents and visitors. There will be displays of photos, maps and documents and members of the steering group will be on hand.

Refreshments will be provided by the Community Library.

Holmer

Holmer WI - The talk at the August meeting was entitled The Wildlife of the Falkland Islands. It was led by Fred Clarke who lived in the islands for 30 years and was an ornithologist, a policeman and a hotel builder. Using a slide presentation, he told members how diverse and numerous the wildlife is, explaining how successfully it has adapted to the extremely windy, treeless conditions. The island is home to many birds including the albatross with a ten- foot wingspan which can sleep on the wing for four-five hours. Also, many varieties of owl, terns, skua, cormorants, oystercatchers, grebe, geese, meadowlarks and vultures, to name but a few. The Falkland Islands are home to 600,000 sheep, while only 1,800 people inhabit the capital Port Stanley.

Fred showed those present slides of penguins, sea lions and orca, as well as other sea mammals. The presentation broadened our understanding of the islands and opened up new and fascinating perspectives for us all. Mr Clarke was duly thanked and roundly applauded. During July, a summer celebration was held at the home of Frances Riddell. The weather was perfect, enhancing a wonderful get together.

Holmer WI will meet again on September 3, at 7.30pm in Holmer Parish Hall next to Holmer Church. The subject will be Hereford Gaol. Ladies, put the date in your diaries and come along! We’re looking forward to welcoming you.

Ross-on-Wye

VAGA PROBUS CLUB - At the meeting on July 28 Gina Bradbury gave a talk on UCAS. Gina, who is head of post-16 development, began by explaining the role of UCAS, which is at the heart of connecting people to higher education. UCAS (meaning Universities, Colleges and Admissions Services) which is the first step young people take on the road to independence/further education. It is an independent charity linked to its subsidiary UCAS Media Ltd providing information, advice and admissions services to inspire and facilitate educational progression.

Leaving home to go to university is the first step your child takes on the road to independence. So how does the application service work and how can you support your child through the process?

UCAS is the online system which processes UK university/college applications. It has a database of all courses with their entry requirements and what else the university/college is looking for.

The website lists all university/ college open days, where open days give you a feel for the place, and you can speak to existing students. The website also has a step- by-step application guide with accompanying videos for students. Parents and students can register for UCAS e-newsletters which will keep them up to date with important deadlines and other key information.

Gina’s talk sparked many questions and statements from club members, particularly those from the teaching profession, who felt that every help should be given to applicants. Finally, Gina was thanked for her dedication to UCAS and taking the time to give this helpful and detailed presentation.
