VISITORS flocked to a recent open day at the Spaceguard Centre near Knighton.

The event was to mark Global Asteroid Day on June 30. At least 200 people came along to have a look around the centre and find out more about how asteroids are detected in space and how their threat is calculated. For many it was a chance to have a look at the surrounding views from various viewing points. Children and their parents found the large outdoor stone circle fascinating.

Spaceguard Centre director Jay Tate thanked everyone for coming and members of the Marches Astronomy group who volunteered on the day to help show the visitors around. They are in the process of building a new dome at the centre which will house the biggest telescope in Wales.

If anyone missed the open day and would like a guided tour of the centre, these take place Wednesday to Sunday every week at 10.30am, 2pm and 4pm. For more information see www.spaceguardcentre.com.
