HAVING now returned to Australia, having spent a month as Mayoress to my brother Charles Nicholls as Hereford Mayor, I should like to give my impression of the city.

It will always be my home town, the place I grew up in and started my married life, a town of beautiful old buildings with so much history.

I was disappointed with the Old Market development. Nothing attracted me into that area, and I ask those people of power, to not let the Butter Market come to the same fate. It could become a lovely arcade if all the stores were behind shutters, leaving the centre area for events with different organisations.

High Town itself is lovely to sit and watch the world go by, although it needs a few more rubbish bins. But please get the ball rolling to remove the scaffolding from the burnt-out building, which has been there for so long. It spoils a lovely view of High Town.

I was impressed by the cheerful manner of staff in shops. It was a pleasure to shop. I was also impressed with the staff at the Imperial Hotel where I ate often.

It was an honour for me to meet some wonderful people, who selflessly helped others. Groups included Riding for the Disabled and Alzheimers Society.

I wish a young lady called Jackie you all the best on her ride for England in the Paralympics.

To the staff at the town hall, thank you all for the welcome you gave me. It was such an honour and privilege to be by brother's side as Mayoress.
