Llandrindod Wells

RADNORSHIRE SOCIETY - The society has been very active recently. On May 17 members of the Field Section met at the Roast Ox Inn at Painscastle, and were led on a fascinating and informative walk by Mo Lloyd, entitled ‘Common rights and enclosures’.

On May 20 a coach full of members went on the society’s annual excursion to neighbouring Montgomeryshire. Gregynog Hall was visited first and members wondered at this seemingly timber-framed hall, encased in a Victorian façade of concrete.

Members were met by the hall’s guide and Gregynog Librarian, Mary Oldham, an out-of-county member of the Radnorshire Society. An excellent talk was given about the history and development of the hall. The excursion continued to the town of Montgomery, with its strategically important castle, a tour of The Old Bell Museum, and a fascinating and informative tour of the town including the church, a building which is worthy of a visit in its own right. The last leg of the trip took members to Welshpool for a trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion Light Railway.

Members of the Radnorshire Society were most grateful for an enjoyable and fitting day organised by the society’s excursion officer, Norma Baird-Murray, assisted by Penny Everett.

Members completed their busy week on May 22 with the second lecture in the society’s programme for 2015. The lecture was given by Eric Rees at the village hall, Llandewi Ystradenni. The talk was entitled ‘Child killer or victim? Mary Morgan of Presteigne’. The title was especially chosen in order to give a sense of mystery to this controversial local story. Mr Rees delivered his lecture on this story with many conflicting versions in a relaxed and informative manner, and the speaker later posed many questions about the story. The story of Mary Morgan is a contentious and mysterious one that still arouses strong feelings and emotions today, as was evident among members present for the lecture.

Mr Rees’s conclusions will be published in a forthcoming article in the 2015 edition of ‘The Transactions of the Radnorshire Society’. Mr Rees was thanked for his lecture by Dr Colin Hughes, honorary secretary of the society.
