Hay-on-Wye

BELL BANK CLUB - Maddie (the dog) has experienced her first encounter with a fun fair but did not take too kindly to the level of noise with bumps and music.

John Price brought a lot of memorabilia into a recent meeting when he showed clips of wonderful views of local scenery and people. Some history of the war years was extremely interesting.

It is the time of year again for the AGM and to choose officers for coming year.

The monthly exercises to music may diminish as, sadly, Linda has decided to move from her home in Aberedw to be near her family in Salisbury next month, but will continue until then. The speaker for the month was Frank Gregg, who is a fundraising officer for Guide Dogs Wales. He delivered the history of guide dogs and brought everyone up to date. He held an “awareness” meeting in The Globe, Hay-on-Wye, on May 14, to help bring folk together and create some fundraising opportunities. The Bell Bank Club offers an opportunity for blind and partially-sighted people to get together and support each other.

They meet every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm in the parish hall, Lion Street, Hay-on-Wye. Contact Eileen Bufton on 01497 820897.

Huntington

FRIENDS OF ST THOMAS A BECKET CHURCH, HUNTINGON - On May 16, Major-General Arthur Denaro honoured the Friends of St Thomas a Becket Church, Huntington, by giving the third talk of the season, Not as Duty Only.

Major-General Denaro talked of his life from being a young soldier rising to being the Commander of the Irish Hussars, in which he led his troops into battle in their Challenger tanks during the liberation of Kuwait in 1990/91. He spoke most movingly as he and his troops prepared themselves to go into battle for the first time in Challenger tanks and facing death the next day. The audience watched images of the tanks at war, some in flames and the oil fields on fire. He spoke of the injuries the soldiers received and how they attempted to surmount these, through their bravery and duty. It left the audience humbled and most moved. But General Denaro also brought in many amusing anecdotes and talked of his time when he served in Libya, Germany and southern Oman. He went on to become chief of staff of UN Forces during the war in former Yugoslavia, Commandant of Sandhurst and then became Middle East adviser to the secretary of state for defence until 2003. This was one of the fin- est talks The Friends have heard and Arthur and Maggi Denaro joined everyone for drinks and canapés, most generously given by friends, in the marquee outside the church, which continued until much later in the evening.

On July 10, regional judges will be voting on all aspects, from colourful planters around the town to local projects, such as “Don’t Litter Leominster” and a competition to design a poster to help stop dog fouling on our streets which Wayne Rosser and the town council are hoping to promote with Leominster schoolchildren.

Or “Build a Bug Hotel” which we hope will bring more wildlife to areas of the town.

Leominster Cadets have been cleaning planters. Leominster First Guides, Brownies and many volunteers have been working hard refilling planters, planting trees and flowers and tidying up the town.

Local businesses have made generous donations but the fundraising continues as new planters have been purchased for West Street and Corn Square. Further donations would be gratefully received.

Longtown Pre-school also donated a marvellous £107 raised as a result of their regular monthly “Tuesday treats” fundraising event, which will go directly to members of the family of a former pre-school and school pupil who are still in Nepal. A group of five ex-pupils also walked from Hay Bluff to Longtown along Hatterall Ridge to raise further money for this cause.

MARDEN GARDENERS - At the club meeting on May 12, the speaker was Frank Hardy talking on “The all-year-round garden”.

What a super character he is, constantly engaging his audience with excellent humour and quick wit. A garden designer by profession he still works on many of the national garden shows. To help demonstrate his talk, he brought along a huge selection of plants and shrubs and showed us how to select small groups for each month of the year. Essentially, to keep our garden interesting all year we must have at least 50 per cent evergreens in our design.

The small conifers are excellent but remember that the term evergreen refers to a plant keeping its leaves over winter, but they can be found in many different colours.

Bulbs and bedding plants are good in their term but need to be long flowering for best results.

All-in-all an excellent evening.

Plant sale, May 16, held at Stony Cross, Marden. Can we thank everyone who kindly contributed plants for sale. We had a huge selection and sold virtually all of them. Many thanks to June for hosting the sale, to those who helped on the day and especially our customers. All proceeds go to gardening club funds.

Just to remind members that there will be no club meeting in June.

We meet every second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in Marden Community Centre, except over the summer months when we often go on garden visits. New members and visitors are always very welcome but there will be a nominal charge to non-members for each visit. FARMERS MARKET - The farmers market will take place on Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm in the Woolhope Village Hall.

As in past months, most of the usual providers will be present, including Fresh Indian Foods using authentic Punjabi recipes passed down through the years from grandmother to mother to daughter.

Spicy (and mild for the more sensitive palate) dhals, sauces, freshly ground spice mixes and Indian tea all freshly made with natural ingredients, all for the love of cooking, will be offered.

Wood ‘n’Wool work with two of nature’s beautiful products. Dave is a craftsman working from his workshop in Durlow, using mainly the quality and beauty of oak to create gifts and bespoke items.

They also have a small flock of Ryeland sheep which provide them with naturally creamy fleece and yarn available for your own wool projects, along with knitting and craft kits and gift items. Refreshments will be available at the market, so why not come along and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and some brunch while you browse through the lovely stalls and products on offer.
