THE founder of a county animal rescue charity said she has been 'bowled over' by the compassion of Herefordshire residents after launching an innovative dog share scheme.

The Hereford Times recently reported on the launch of a part-time dog ownership scheme, pioneered by Kingsland Boarding Kennel and Cattery, which encompasses dog rescue charity Fresh Start.

Since then, there have been eight dog shares, three dogs sponsored, one cat sponsored, six dogs reserved for adoption, five dogs adopted, three cats adopted and one cat fostered.

Owner, Safi Zagni, who implemented the scheme, said: "I am absolutely blown away by the response – I cannot thank the Hereford Times enough. The boost this has given to Fresh Start is incredible, we have been busier this past few weeks than we have ever been."

She said that one successful dog share had involved a man who takes Molly, a small staffy, out whenever he can as well as for sleepovers.

"Her owner was a scrap metal merchant and used to take her to work every day, so she wasn't used to life without constant human company. She was found lying next to his dead body," said Ms Zagni.

"Elwyn is a welder and being on dog share with him has given her a new lease of life. She is much more content when she comes back into kennels now and gets excited every time he comes to get her. She has also bonded with his son, who loves playing with her.

"It is brilliant that so many of the lovely dogs and cats are being given a second chance and the love they deserve. I am bowled over by the compassion of the Herefordshire public."

KBKC is offering local people the chance to adopt a rescue dog on a part time basis, with the dedicated team at the kennels caring for them the remainder of the time.

Each scheme will be bespoke to give the best possible scenario for person and pooch.
