BROMYARD Wind Band has been celebrating the 95th birthday of one of its members.

Ken Farr, born in 1920, having spent a lifetime in music was guest of honour at a surprise concert for him, in Hereford.

Ken is a lifelong member of the Salvation Army, and although retired both as Salvation Army bandmaster, and head of music in a county secondary school, he is still actively playing his cornet both in the local Salvation Army Band, and Bromyard Wind Band.

He also runs his own over-60s band.

Ken's son, Ray, an internationally known brass band conductor and composer, along with Bromyard Wind Band conductor David Thomas, organised the concert at Hereford Salvation Army, where many attended to honour an outstanding musician and friend.

In attendance were not only members of the two bands that Ken plays in, but also the Salvation Army Songsters (choir).

The highlight of the evening was a Cornet Trio, with Ken as one of the soloists, accompanied by Bromyard Wind Band, in a world premiere wind band performance of Ray Farr's arrangement of The Veterans.

Ken also conducted Bromyard Wind Band in some pieces.
