A MAN who had been out drinking in Hereford city centre was found slumped over the steering wheel in a car, a court heard.

Ashton Smith, 34, from Dainty Street, Gloucester pleaded guilty to drink driving last week.

Hereford Magistrates Court heard that on March 8 at 7.15am a witness spotted a car partially off the highway in Hoarwithy Road in Hereford and Smith was slumped over the steering wheel.

Police attended and breathalysed Smith, who had 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Lesley Ashton, prosecuting, said Smith had been drinking at Mamma Jammas in West Street but cannot remember leaving the club.

But she said Smith said he could remember a strong feeling he wanted to harm himself around the time he left.

Matthew Lewis, defending, said Smith suffered with mental health problems and had spent time in hospital under supervision of a psychiatrist, and was now on medication.

Smith was disqualified from driving for 20 months, which will be reduced by five months if he takes a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

He was fined £150 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim-surcharge.
