HOLMER WI - The talk for the April meeting was given by Julia Orton Davis, a local historian, and was entitled The Munitions Factory at Rotherwas. Mrs Davis’ presentation proved to be a fascinating insight into an intriguing and significant part of the history of Hereford. Julia told an interested audience about the Canary Girls, young ladies who made the munitions.

They worked 12 hour shifts in teams of 10 - 12, some great friendships were made. In addition, the work gave them independence, a sense of duty and, of course, money - at best a weekly wage of £2.10 shillings per week. A relatively well paid job when compared with other employment available at the time. There were two factories, Amatol and Lyddite.

The land was purchased from the Rotherwas Estate in 1916, the first shell was produced on November 11, 1916. 142 women and 57 men were initially employed there.

Julia showed members present some interesting slides which, together with her talk, clearly depicted the dangerous and harmful work, terrible working conditions in the factories as well as portraits of several of the young workers. Advertisements were placed in the Hereford Times telling young women that they were wanted to bolster the war effort in the munitions factories. Girls from as far away as Southern Ireland answered the appeal. By 1918, 4000 girls were employed but the turnover was high.

Because of the dangerous substances used at Rotherwas, the girls’ skin turned yellow, their hair turned yellowish green.

Digestive problems were common, sometimes girls’ teeth fell out, and, sadly two girls died.

They were entitled to a half pint of milk per day, free travel and a ticket for a free bath.

There was even a ladies football team! The canteen team won the match played on Christmas Day, raising money to send out to the boys in the Hereford Regiment.

A vote of thanks was given and a hearty round of applause, showing appreciation for a thought provoking and interesting talk.

Club president, Jenny, told us that the centenary of the formation of the WI will be celebrated this year and that a garden party will be held on June 2, in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and in the presence of the Duchess of Cornwall. Each WI in the country will be invited to send one representative chosen by ballot. It will be an occasion to be marked and remembered.

Also, Holmer WI were pleased to have two teams progressing through the first round of the countywide WI quiz, to the final which will take place on April 10.
