IT is not often I agree with the city council but I back their refusal to pay a fortune to a woman from Helensburgh for her house (House in middle of school, September 12).

We don't want our council tax spent on lining the pockets of someone who already has a home outwith the city.

The parents who are annoyed by the council decision should start now to raise money to buy the house and donate it to the city.

After all, it's for the benefit of their and future West End kids and nothing to do with residents in the rest of the city. VC, South Side Thanks for park prom

I'D like to pass on my thanks and appreciation to everyone involved in staging Proms in the Park on Glasgow Green Saturday night.

The weather couldn't have been kinder, and the Green resounded with fantastic music, applause and cheers from the massive crowd.

It was great to see people of all ages, waving flags and clearly loving the really varied programme which was headlined by the amazing Nicola Benedetti, but included something for almost every musical taste - not to mention the fantastic fireworks. What a spectacle!

Well, the picnic rug and basket is packed away now, but I can't wait till next year. W MILLER, Via e-mail Viewers are the losers

ON Saturday night STV broadcast a three-hour show (12midnight-3am) entitled STV Casino. Is this glorified gambling den supposed to be entertainment?

Perhaps it is part of the "exciting and innovative" programming they keep harping on about, which, they say, will help encourage Scottish production and acting talent. If it is, they must think out heads button up the back.

Elsewhere I read that STV want £5million of government cash to help fulfil their public service commitment to local news. Why doesn't the government give them £10m and tell them to buy some half-decent programmes? W SCANLON, Glasgow Rikki has the X Factor

I WOULD like to say a huge thank you to X Factor contestant Rikki Loney. He brought the traffic to a standstill in Parkhouse on Sunday evening.

He spent almost two hours signing autographs, having his picture taken with all his fans, speaking to old and young and even taking the time to speak with strangers on the other end of the many phones that were being thrust into his hand.

Even the adults from our local takeaway, Chillies in Hawthorn Street, were starstruck.

What a great, patient guy, although I don't know how his relatives felt at constantly having their door chapped by the hoards of fans.

Rikki, you're a star and you made my daughter's day. You can count on our votes... lots of them if my daughters have their say. WENDY, Via e-mail Pothole prevention

IT is not fair to lay the blame for all the potholes at the doors of the utility companies. Where I stay, in Holmlea Road, Cathcart, the gas company have just filled in a hole perfectly. However, at the junctions of both Rannoch Street and Orchy Street, where the buses turn, there are permanent potholes.

At least once a month the council come and throw in shovels of tarry stones - once on top of a puddle. The stones are no sooner in than they are washed out again.

Perhaps they should follow the gas company's lead and do it properly the first time. JUNE HOWDEN, Via e-mail WRITE: Evening Times, 200 Renfield Street, Glasgow G2 3QB. NOW that SPT boss Councillor Alistair Watson is backing an £8m overhaul of Dalmarnock station, could he tell us of progress with their 2007 scheme to spend up to £120m on an extension of the Subway between Kelvin Hall and Parkhead?

At that time he was quoted as saying: "We will deliver this East End extension for 2014 - I'm unequivocal about that". I MACLEAN, Via e-mail A very high price to pay

OH well, I suppose all the fancy dan ideas of re-opening the old tunnels and rebuilding the old station at Celtic Park are dead now.

Perhaps it's just as well. If it costs £8m to do up one station, how much would a real transport legacy cost? BILL FORBES, Cambuslang Re-open Parkhead

DALMARNOCK station is in the middle of a grotty industrial estate, which in itself is a fair old walk from the Games site. And you then have to brave the southern end of Springfield Road without getting mugged by druggies.

People have been campaigining for decades to have Parkhead station on the Airdrie-Helensburgh line reopened. OK, it isn't any closer to the Games site, but at least it would provide links to the Forge and communities in Haghill and the new John Wheatley campus further up the road. RAPID ASSISTANT, Glasgow Flooding problems

DALMARNOCK station needs done-up, but maybe they could put a roof on it so the tracks don't get flooded every time we have a bit of rain. LIMERICK BOY, Posted online Area ignored for years

IF I lived in Dalmarnock I'd want to know why no one cared about me living in a slum for decades but as soon as some sporty types promise to pitch up in five years we need to smarten everything up.

The new station will be just as useless as before, only a bit smarter. ST MONAN, Glasgow It's an underused relic

THE only reason the station is to be tarted up is so not to offend the eyes of athletes and visitors. Why spend £8m when it will just be an underused relic after the games? GRAHAM, Glasgow
