A STUDENT armed with a two-foot-long machete and a combat knife viciously attacked three men in a nightclub.

Maths student Jason McEnhill, 21, walked into the foyer of the club with his dad Anthony McEnhill, 46, and brandished the knife while swinging the machete above his head.

Doctors said victim Paul Young would have died without medical attention after being stabbed in the groin.

Gary Miller was struck on the arm and Charles Bolger almost had the tip of his middle finger severed as the three victims, all in their twenties, celebrated a friend's 21st birthday.

At the High Court in Glasgow, prosecutor Kevin McCallum said: "The three men were about to leave the nightclub when McEnhill and his father, Anthony McEnhill, entered.

"McEnhill had a large machete with a two foot blade in his right hand and a large combat-style knife in his left hand."

The court heard that Glasgow University student McEnhill launched the attack at Fury Murray's in Shuttle Street, Paisley, before a bouncer grabbed him and bundled him into a cupboard. But when police arrived they were told McEnhill had not been involved in the incident and allowed him to go home with his dad.

Later examination of the cupboard revealed that McEnhill had left the machete and the knife there.

The weapons were found to have McEnhill's DNA on them, while the knife had Mr Young's blood on it and the machete had Mr Bolger's blood on it.

In court McEnhill, of Craw Road, Paisley, admitted assaulting Mr Young after the original charge of attempted murder was reduced. He also admitted assaulting Mr Miller and Mr Bolger on September 28 last year.

McEnhill's father Anthony, who had faced a charge of attempted murder and two charges of assault, walked free after his not guilty pleas were accepted.

Mr McCallum said the motive is not known and that earlier that night McEnhill was seen in CCTV footage in altercations with unknown males.

Judge Lord Brailsford deferred sentence until next month and remanded McEnhill in custody.
