SCOTS DJ Edith Bowman and her BBC colleague Jo Whiley are to lose their weekday slots on Radio 1.

They are being replaced by two younger presenters in the biggest shake-up at the station for five years.

Bowman, 35, will move from hosting the 1pm show to a weekend breakfast programme.

Her weekday afternoon slot will be filled by Greg James, 23, a rising star of the station.

Fearne Cotton, 27, who already co-hosts a weekend show, will take over the prime-time morning slot hosted for the past eight years by Whiley, 44, who will now present a weekend programme.

The BBC also announced that 24-year-old Dev, who currently presents the weekend breakfast show, will take over the weekday early morning show vacated by James.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said: "Radio 1 must continue to change to connect with a new generation of audiences."

The changes come after the BBC Trust warned Radio 1 should "renew its focus" on the younger groups of its target audience after the number of 15 to 19 year olds tuning in fell "significantly" and its audience of 30-to-39 year olds rose "significantly".
