STAFF at a petrol station who will lose their jobs when the city link road is built in Hereford said a new council sign is "unsympathetic."

A sign has been put up in Edgar Street announcing that work commences on the Hereford City Link Road in spring 2015 "delivering jobs and homes."

But staff at the BP petrol station in Edgar Street have branded the sign "unsympathetic" as they will lose their jobs when the petrol station is knocked down to make way for the road.

Ian Morgan, who works at the garage, said: "I work at BP Edgar Street and all of us are being made redundant, yet we are still waiting for a closing date.

"But now we have to look out of the shop window to see this sign about delivering jobs- if that's not unsympathetic!"

Peter Jones, who owns the site, said he is still waiting to hear from Herefordshire Council about when work will begin and he has been consistently told different dates.

He said it is very unsettling for the five members of staff.

A spokesman for Herefordshire Council said: “The council has been in discussion with businesses affected by the Link Road for a number of years and have kept those affected up to date with the programme for the construction of the road.

"We are sorry for the individual in question and would have hoped the business owner would keep staff up to date of this. We have assisted in successfully relocating a number of businesses along the route of the road and the construction of the road will create hundreds of jobs and 800 new homes in the city.”
