YOUNG people are being given the chance to find out more about voting, in readiness for this year's general election.

In the most recent local elections, almost 70 percent of young people didn't vote and 24 percent of 18 to 21-year-olds have never registered.

Hope Support Services, which is based in Ross, has organised an interactive event, 'What are they on about?' aiming to break down the barriers for young people when it comes to voting.

Taking place at the Hereford College of Arts, College Road Campus on March 20, party representatives and public figures, including the deputy police and crime commissioner, will be on hand to explain how it all works.

Attendees will also have the chance to quiz candidates speed-dating style, and discuss the issues that mean a lot to them.

Youth development officer, SammyJay Powell, said: “A lot of the young people we have spoken to openly say that they don’t understand the election and it’s not relevant to them, but it is.

"It’s important to us that this event really does have the young people at the heart of it.”

Schools, colleges and youth organisations have been invited but the event is open to all 15 to 25s in Herefordshire. For more information or to book a place, email adam.jeffery@hopesupportservices.org.uk or ring 01989 566317.
