ALMOST five hundred businesses will soon be asked to vote on whether a business improvement group should be formed in Hereford.

Retailers are being encouraged to back the fledgling Hereford BID (Business Improvement District) plan, with those behind the idea hoping it will “improve the Hereford experience and enhance business performance.”

The idea is being spearheaded by John Jones, a director at Philip Morris & Son on Widemarsh Street and would be funded by a levy of 1.2 per cent on the rateable value of each eligible business in the BID area, which covers more than 40 city centre streets.

To qualify for a vote, businesses must have a rateable value of at least £7,500.

“I hope it’s backed by the businesses,” said Mr Jones.

“I’m confident but a lot will depend on the larger companies as votes count for more if you have a greater rateable value.”

He said the BID already has a range of projects planned, should the vote go in its favour, including increasing footfall in Hereford and making it easier to park.

Voting opens on January 15 and closes on February 12.

Should a “Yes” vote be achieved, the Hereford BID would start life at the beginning of April.
