AS the price of fuel continues to tumble, the prospect of petrol dropping to £1 a litre could be a reality by the end of the month experts are saying - and we're certainly edging closer to it in parts of Herefordshire.

Yesterday the boss of supermarket chain Sainsbury's suggested the £1 litre may be with us in a matter of weeks.

Chief executive Mike Coupe made the prediction as Brent crude was being traded at below $50 a barrel for the first time since 2009.

Speaking to the BBC he said: "If the oil price continues to fall, almost certainly. We have certainly seen prices chased down, mainly by the supermarkets.

"You could feasibly see fuel prices fall below the £1 barrier."

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have all cut the price of petrol and diesel by 2p per litre.

Today the price of a litre of unleaded at West Hereford Service Station on Whitecross Road was 107.8p - which may currently be the cheapest in the county.

At Tesco today in Belmot unleaded in 108.9p per litre, while diesel is 115.9p per litre.

Yesterday, Sainsbury's in Hereford was selling its fuel at the same price.

But it all depends on where you live in the county when it comes to getting the cheapest fuel.

While Morrisons in Leominster is selling its unleaded for 108.9p per litre, and diesel for 116.09p per litre, motorists filling up in Bromyard are spending up to 7p more per litre for unleaded and diesel.

As of yesterday, the town's Bypass Garage was selling unleaded at 112.9p per litre and diesel at 119.9p per litre, while the Top Garage on Hereford Road was selling unleaded at 115.9p per litre, and diesel at 123.9p per litre.

Motorists filling up in Ross-on-Wye will fair a little better - yesterday the town's Morrisons garage was selling petrol at 109.9p per litre and diesel at 116.9p per litre.

But the Wilton Garage on the A40 was selling unleaded at 112.9p per litre, while at the Spur Service Area on the A449, the price of unleaded yesterday was 115.9p per litre.

Ledbury is enjoying the second-lowest price for unleaded in the county at the moment - the Spar and Parkway garages are selling it at 107.9p per litre, and diesel at 116.9p per litre.

Out at Kington, the Lomas Service Station was yesterday selling unleaded at 117.9p per litre and diesel at 122.9p.

In the south of the county in Allensmore, Locks garage was selling unlead at 108.9p today, and diesel for 115.9p per litre for diesel.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said the latest cuts would further lower the average price of petrol, which is now cheaper than it has been for around five years.

Mr Williams added: “The cuts are bringing us ever closer to the £1-per-litre average for petrol.

“Of course it would also be an extremely welcome move for motorists and businesses alike.”

*Has it changed where you are since we posted the prices above? Or have you seen a cheaper litre of unleaded in the county?
