CHURCH SERVICES - Next Sunday is Plough Sunday and there will be a special service at Aymestrey Church at 9.30am.

You are invited to come and join in this ancient service which traditionally marks the start of the farming year to include the blessing of the plough.

QUIZ NIGHT - The first quiz night of 2015 takes place tomorrow at 8pm.

Teams of up to four members at £5 with a cash prize for the wining team.

Refreshments will be available in the interval and contestants are welcome to bring their own beverages.

FILM CLUB - Aymestrey Film Club starts the 2015 season Sunday, with a showing of the popular film Pride (15) starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West.

Pride is inspired by an extraordinary true story.

It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London- based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families.

Initially rebuffed by the union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.

As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

Start time is 7pm and home-made ice creams and popcorn will be served.

PUB GAMES NIGHT - A pub games night will be held in the parish hall on January 17.

Entrance is £5 and will include a choice of two soups and some delicious puddings.

This is a fun night with a chance to take part in some long forgotten pub games such as darts, quoits, bar billiards, dominoes and table football.

Start time is 7pm for 7.30pm.

Bartestree

BIG CAT TALK - Herefordshire Mammal Group will be hosting a talk by Rick Minter on feral cats in and around Herefordshire.

Rick is the author of Big Cats - Facing Britain’s Wild Predators and works with the Big Cat Study at the Royal Agricultural University.

At least two witnesses will also be present to explain their encounter with a presumed big cat in Herefordshire.

PARISH COUNCIL - The next meeting of Bishopstone Group Parish Council will take place at the New Bridge Community Centre today at 7.30pm. Residents of the five parishes that make up the group are welcome to attend and to raise matters of local concern.

CAFÉ AT THE CHAPEL - The regular Thursday morning Café at the Chapel in Chapel Lane will return today from 10.30am till noon.

The café provides an opportunity for anyone to call in for an informal chat over a cup of tea, coffee, etc on Thursday mornings.

Everyone is welcome to stay for as long or as short a time as they wish.

No charge is made for refreshments though donations are welcome and are given to a charity at the end of each year.

This is a joint venture between St Michael’s Church, Bodenham and Bodenham Christian Fellowship and is hosted by members from both churches (and other local residents). Details from Dave Hill on 01568 797531.

TRAVELS WITH A CAMERA - The next Travels with a Camera event will be tomorrow at 7.30pm and will feature A Tour of Two Towns (Tenby and Southwold) as presented by Brian Skinner.

A KNIT-IN - The Bodenham Romania Support Group will be holding a ‘knit-in’ at 7 Ash Grove View, from 2pm till 4pm on January 15.

New members are always welcome.

Donations of any kind of wool are always appreciated but there is no charge for anything and advice or assistance is never far away.

Bredwardine and Brobury

100 CLUB DRAW - The 100 Club is a group of people who have bought one or more of a limited number of tickets that are entered into a monthly draw.

Each ticket costs £20 and profits from the 100 Club go to St Andrew’s Church which serves the Bredwardine and Brobury community.

The draw itself is a lively event, where numbers are picked from a barrel by guest hosts and four lucky winners receive prizes of £50, £25, £15 and £10.

It all takes place in the Red Lion Inn at 8pm on the first Thursday of the month, but many people get there earlier to eat the delicious curry buffet and meet up with friends.

The first draw of 2015 will take place on Thursday, January 8 at 8pm in the Red Lion Inn.

Drop in any time between 10am and noon, for a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones over fresh coffee and home-baked cakes.

The market is growing too; on the food side there are stalls selling fresh vegetables, free range eggs, cakes, jams and chutneys.

Alongside this there is a splendid selection of arts and crafts, knitwear and jewellery created by local artists and ideal for gifts.

You can pick up a movie, a book or some music to take home or just browse through a magazine while you sip your coffee.

And if you feel like it, bring along something to sell; it only costs £1 to rent a table.

CHRISTMAS CHURCH FUNDRAISER - Eaton Bishop village hall was packed with villagers enjoying a full traditional Christmas turkey lunch on December 7.

Once again, the smartly dressed waiters served up delicious fare produced by the village cooks.

The afternoon continued with ‘heads and tails’, a Christmas quiz and a raffle of Christmas goodies, followed by an auction of homemade cakes.

The day culminated with a rowdy and sometimes tuneful sing-song of much-loved carols.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event so successful and, apart from a good time had by all, the day raised £780 which will assist in the maintenance of our beautiful church.

HEREFORDSHIRE HEALTH SERVICE RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP - The first meeting of the new year for the Herefordshire Health Services Retirement Fellowship (HHSRF) will be held on January 19, at 2pm in the St John’s Methodist Hall, St Owen Street, Hereford. The Fellowship members have had a wonderful 2014 and now that new year is finally here, let’s all enjoy an even better 2015. The guest speaker this month is Mr Derek Foxton, who will be giving his talk on “The Development of Modern Hereford”. We are really looking forward to his presentation as Hereford has changed so much in recent years. It should be both fascinating and interesting for all of us.

NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN- Following the talk, by Bishop Anthony Priddis, on the potential for alternative sources of nuclear fuel, Hereford Branch put forward a resolution, at conference, urging Her Majesty’s Government to return to research into safer, renewable forms of nuclear power. The resolution was passed unanimously and we are already receiving responses from government departments and other interested parties.

Other speakers to the Branch included Sylvie Sklan who explained the ethos behind Rudolph Steiner education and her role in achieving recognition for its value and efficacy. The Steiner School in Much Dewchurch thus became an Academy. We heard also from Mair Granthier of the work of the Baptist Church in Hereford and of our Street Pastors and the splendid work they do in helping those who need it after a night out. (There was a full article about them recently in the Hereford Times ).

Christmas lunch was again at The Pilgrim at Much Birch, where we enjoyed the food and the setting, as well as not “working” but just enjoying one another’s company. Gwenda Nicholas, our newly elected national president (of whom we are very proud) gave us an update on her work so far in promoting equality and “a better life for all” as has been our aim since 1895. Our speaker meetings – to which all women are invited – are held at Hampton Bishop village hall on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month. LUNCH CLUB PARTY - Members of the Knighton and District Churches Together lunch club met for their Christmas dinner in Knighton Methodist church.

Cook Sue Morris catered for about 50 people who all enjoyed a full turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding, mince pies, cake and drinks. Knighton and District Rotary Club donated money to buy presents for all the members that were given out during a surprise visit from Father Christmas. Members also enjoyed music from Tom Mosler and sang carols led by Rod. On behalf of committee members of the lunch club, Margaret Davies and Alison Thomas thanked Sue Morris and all her helpers for a wonderful lunch, Knighton and District Rotary club for the gifts, Father Christmas, Tom and Rod for the music, Sue and John Bywater for donating all the vegetables and everyone else who contributes to the running of the popular club.

The next lunch club will be on January 12.
