AN under-threat service that provides a vital lifeline for disabled shoppers has received a boost from local businesses.

The Hereford Times reported last month that Hereford City Shopmobility Service, which provides mobility scooters, electronic and manual wheelchairs, was at risk of ending due to funding issues.

Local charity, Services for Independent Living (SIL), now desperately needs sponsorship from local businesses and individuals to ensure the service can continue after March 2015 – when funding will be cut again.

And the charity this week celebrated receiving a new scooter bought for them by Hereford Rotary Club, supplied at cost by Hereford Mobility Centre.

Cargill and Bluebird Care have also each sponsored a scooter for £500.

Euan McPherson, head of self directed support services with SIL, said: "It's a very positive start. Companies have recognised the opportunity that there is value for them and it gives them an opportunity to support a valuable service.

"But we still need to raise many thousands of pounds and I'll be writing to other businesses in Hereford asking for their ongoing support."

Any businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring can call Mr McPherson at SIL on 01568 616 653.
