COMPUTING expertise at a county primary school has been recognised by technology giant Apple.

The company – which designs and creates the iPhone, iMac and a number of other products – has made Walford Primary School, near Ross-on-Wye, one of its Regional Training Centres (RTC).

Two years ago, Walford Primary School introduced iPads into the classroom as part of its balanced curriculum and now all pupils, staff, governors and many parents use them.

As an RTC – the first in Herefordshire – Walford will be able to share its knowledge and expertise with primary and secondary schools, parents and members of the community through a calendar of events and workshops.

Walford Primary School head teacher, Louise George, said: "Gaining the Apple Regional Training Centre Status is a real achievement and accolade.

"It means that Apple considers us to be a school with advanced knowledge and understanding of how to use their technology for learning effectively.

"Walford has always been proud of the high quality education it provides. In today’s rapidly changing technological world, it is essential that children are able to benefit from the incredible educational opportunities that this technology offers."

The Apple RTC programme brings together a wider community of experienced educators and experts who provide free and easy access to Apple’s creative learning technologies, through local learning-hubs.

Claire Weyman, Walford’s computing coordinator, said: "The events are about improving teaching and learning through the use of computing and sharing best practice.

"We have concentrated on the use of iPads this year and will be updating events to include the use of Macs in the future.

"The focus will always be on improving and enhancing learning, giving colleagues the opportunity to share best practice and get hands-on experience using technology.”
