AN application for up to 45 new homes in Withington has been refused by county planners this morning (Wed).

The homes were proposed  for land adjacent to Vine Tree Close, a site
Withington Parish Council said was not acceptable.

Planners were told that the application attracted 64 letters of objection, but officers had recommended approval.

Ward councillor Dave Greenow asked for a deferral of any decision  ahead of "detailed plans" being submitted.

Cllr Greenow's concerns about access to the site and the impact on nearby homes were shared by several other members at the meeting.

Councillor Felicity Norman said: "If we are going to be in the position where we are obliged to support the recommendation because of the situation we are in regarding housing land then we want something worth voting for. Something of quality that meets the standards - something that's going to be an asset."

Both Cllr Norman and Councillor Mark Hubbard referred to comments provided by the Herefordshire branch on the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) which stated that that there was "nothing innovative or outstanding" about the outline proposal.

There would also be an effect on the character of the village and the neighbouring conservation area according to Councillor Phil Edwards.

Fifteen councillors voted to refuse the application, citing the sustainability of the site, its impact on the surrounding area and access to it as some of the reasons.
