A RUNNER and two spectators were taken to hospital after a freak gust of wind brought down a timber finish line at a popular Mud Runner event.

During the last 45 minutes of yesterday's Mud Runner Classic, which is held at the Eastnor Estate near Ledbury, a gust of wind blasted through the race village.

The director of D3 Active, which organises the annual race, Fiona Day, said: "Such was its strength, that it uprooted and fractured the timber frame supporting the finish sign.

"As the frame came down, it struck two people who were spectating at the finish line and one runner.

"The onsite medical team responded quickly and treated those involved; however, all three were taken to Worcester hospital."

She said all three were discharged later in the evening.

Ms Day added: "As organisers, the incident has shocked us all. Our overriding consideration is for the safety of the participants and spectators alike as we work hard to make Mud Runner a fun, family and safe event for the many thousands who attend.

"We will of course review this incident and introduce any measures we feel necessary to maintain the safety of everyone coming to Mud Runner."

Nearly 4,000 runners took part in both the junior and adult races, which were sell outs this year.

Competitors battle their way through mud and swamps while tackling hills and rutted tracks.

The junior race, which is 5km, sold out two months before and is open to five to 15-year-olds. John Hamilton came first for the boys with 17m45s and Briony Bishop took first place for the girls with 22m05s.

The adult race is 10km- James Bingham took first place in the men's with a time of 49m30s and Amy Elias was the first female home with 1h05m06s.
