Madley

PARISH COUNCIL - Claypits Lane has now been resurfaced as part of a project undertaken by the parish council in partnership with BT and Welsh Water. The parish council would like to thank BT and Welsh Water for their contribution to the scheme, which will benefit the community greatly. The surface of the lane is massively improved and it is hoped that children will now use this as a safe route to school, with parents parking at the recreation field and children walking to and from school using Claypits Lane.

This will help ease congestion in the village at school pick-up and drop-off time, which will be safer for the children as the route to the recreation field has no roads to cross. Another project that has been undertaken by the parish council is the installation of a public access defibrillator on the outside of Madley Parish Hall, which will be available for use in an emergency. Although no training is required to use the device, the parish council will be arranging a training session for anyone interested in attending. The parish council would like to thank the British Heart Foundation for funding received towards the purchase of the device, which is a great asset to the community. The parish council is applying for various pots of funding towards recreation field improvements, and in partnership with the parish hall committee, has been successful in obtaining funding from New Grove Trust to purchase football goalposts, two picnic benches and two seating benches for the recreation field. Thanks to New Grove Trust for this funding.

It is the first stage of the improvements and will give people somewhere to sit and enjoy the field, whether it be to have a picnic, supervise children or just to take in the scenery. The football goalposts have been long awaited by many of the children and young people in the community and will be a welcome addition.

We are looking for volunteers who would be able and willing to help install the benches and the goalposts – if this is something you would be able to help with, please contact the parish clerk, Carla Boyles on 01432 271209 or clerk@ madley.org.uk. This year 24 layouts were exhibited ranging from the very expensive to the very intricate and the very compact. In addition, six traders were in attendance with all aspects of railway modelling available for sale to both the budding and the experienced modeller.

Refreshments were available from the buffet car which did a roaring and much appreciated trade in homemade sandwiches, snacks and cakes.

The many comments and suggestions received from exhibitors, traders and the general public were all very positive, and Ross Rotary hopes the exhibition will now become an annual event.

This year it raised over £2,500, which will be donated to a number of local charities and good causes, especially to the Marches Family Network which is the 2014/15 president’s charity.

Ross Rotary sincerely thanks John Kyrle High School for their support and for allowing the event to take place on their premises, the exhibitors and traders for their enthusiasm and the general public and residents of Ross-on- Wye who made this event the success it undoubtedly was.

At a recent meeting of Ross Rotary Club Paula McGivern gave an interesting, informative and mind opening talk on the work of the Alzheimer’s Society and the disease itself.

Paula described the Alzheimer’s Society as the UK’s leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. They campaign for better quality of life for people with dementia and a greater understanding of the disease.

They also fund an innovative programme of medical and social research into the cause, cure and prevention of dementia and the care people receive.

She said that currently there are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK and it costs the country £23 billion a year. However, with two thirds of sufferers living at home, family carers save the NHS around £8 billion a year. She added that the total number of dementia sufferers in the UK is forecast to rise to one million by 2021.

Paula said that dementia is caused by diseases of the brain and is not a natural part of ageing. She stated that there were over 100 forms of dementia and described Alzheimers as the most common form with vascular as the second most common.

Although the disease is progressive, each sufferer will experience it uniquely.

The Alzheimer’s Society runs the Ross Memory Cafe at the Larruperz Centre on the last Tuesday of the month between noon and 2pm. It provides informal advice, support and information to people with dementia and carers of people with dementia.

Ross Rotary Club meets every Monday, 6.30pm for 7pm at the Chase Hotel. All very welcome, visit rossrotary.com.
