WITH bus routes getting cut across the county, a community consortium from Hay-On-Wye has saved a Sunday service to the border town.
As of October, the new route – called Hay Ho! ¬– will let visitors go from Hereford to Hay three times on Sundays.
The decision to save the at-risk route came after research revealed the popularity of the tourist town for weekend breaks, with many visitors wishing to catch a bus on Sundays in order to return home via train from Hereford station.
Anna Heywood of Hay Tourism Group – who along with Herefordshire Ramblers, the Chamber of Commerce and Rail For Herefordshire are responsible for the project – ¬said: “Our tourist information staff get many requests about travelling to Hereford on Sundays.
“We are keen to tie the new bus service in with our events such as the Hay Walking Festival and Hay Bike Fest.”
The Hay Ho! bus will be contracted by Herefordshire Council and replace the 39A, running Hay-Hereford at 1010, 1310 and 1610, with return trip scheduled for 1150, 1450 and 1720.
It will also offer cheaper single fares to attract young people.
