A ONE-day study day on Herefordshire's Picturesque movement is to be held as part of Aardvark Books' history weekend.

The event takes place on Saturday (August 16) and at 11am, local author Peter Burden will be talking about Richard Payne Knight and his work at Downton Castle – his estate between Brampton Bryan and Ludlow.

Both lectures will be illustrated, and there will also be a small collection of relevant artefacts on display.

At 2pm, professor Charles Watkins, author of the recently published ‘Uvedale Price: Decoding the Picturesque’, will be talking about Price, his work on his estate at Foxley and his friendships with other key figures in the Picturesque movement.

Throughout the history weekend, battlefield historian Martin Hackett will be showing his detailed model of Brampton Bryan during the siege of 1643, and his reconstruction of the most probable site for the ever contentious Battle of Mortimers Cross.

Mr Hackett will also bring a range of artefacts – from the ancient and medieval period through to the civil war.

Outside the bookshop, Dudley Museum curator Adrian Durkin will be demonstrating and teaching longbow archery with opportunities for visitors of all ages to participate.

There will be a display of early 20th century photographs of Herefordshire, as well as a small display of material about Deerfold, the ancient Mortimer family hunting park between Lingen and Wigmore.
