IT'S 100 years ago today that Britain declared war on Germany, and fittingly reader Roger Jones has sent in this poignant image.

It shows young men enlisting on Hereford's Castle Green in August 1914.

He says: "My mother had this family photograph which was taken on Castle Green, Hereford in August 1914.

"It shows all the brave volunteers who joined up at he outbreak of war. Included in the picture are two of mother's brothers, Fred and Bill Morgan who at that time lived in Stoke Edith.

"They joined the Herefords, Fred was 17 and Bill was just 16 years old.

"After training they were posted to Egypt. They both survived the war, Fred returned to his job with GWR, Bill signed on again with the KSLI."

!Fred told me that he spent Christmas 1917 in Jerusalem, he was later posted to the Western Front where he was wounded. Bill finished the war in Macedonia."
