THE annual open day at the Rhos Market Garden in between Knighton and Whitton was a great success. Lots of people attended the event including MP Roger Williams and there was plenty to see and do for everyone. The theme this year was 'worms' there were worm stories from storyteller Cindy Lou, a wormery, the chance to make a giant worm with Charlie Goode of Crafty Foxes and the highlight of the afternoon the first Radnorshire worm charming championships. The championships started badly for a few contestant with some not finding a single worm but as the day progressed skills improved and with a mixture of watering the ground, walking round and round, playing a variety of music instruments, and wiggling a fork around in the ground the worms started to appear. The winners were Rosie, Erin, Megan, Flora and Carys, schoolgirls from John Beddoes and Gladestry who managed to charm eight worms out of the ground in 20 minutes allowed. Other attractions during the event were the chance to have a look around the market garden, talk to volunteers from the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, buy plants from Whimble Nursery, watch Gareth Erwin of Penybont Green woodwork make amazing wooden birds out of small pieces of wood, lots of refreshments, a Footprint hand roasted coffee stall, music and more. Mick Westrip and Alice Tite who run the market garden thanked everyone for attending and everyone who volunteered to help them on the day.
