Adding to the city’s recent reputation as the grilling capital of the country is the launch of Hereford’s first dedicated BBQ joint.

Following rave reviews for The Beefy Boys and the Rule of Tum pop-ups, ‘BBQs & Brews’ is due to open in September and will be the latest face of Commercial Road’s Hop Pole, formerly O’Neil’s.

Billed as a “carnivorous celebration of American Deep South pit barbecue” the restaurant/bar will bring together the best of US cooking with the finest in Herefordshire ingredients.

For years it has been managing director Marc Craddock’s dream to open a BBQ restaurant that highlights Hereford beef and booze heritage.

Doors will close at the Hop Pole on September 8 and reopen as BBQs and Brews on September 25, with an additional 24 staff members.

General manager Nikki Ball said the new-look bar-restaurant will still keep its status as one of Hereford’s premier sports bars, screening live sports on televisions at the front of the bar and extending its license for events like the Superbowl.

However it will now feature an open kitchen, where diners can see the chefs use imported American ‘smokers’ to slow cook the Herefordshire beef for up to 18 hours before serving it.

At the bar the local theme will continue, with Wye Valley ales lining up alongside Weston’s and Orgasmic cider and wide range of craft beers and bourbon-based cocktails.

Ms Ball added that BBQ is the fastest growing food trend in the UK.

Why do things have to be American style, Italian style, Mexican style or any other country style, what is wrong with British style?

Are people so embarrassed about this country now? But it is ok, they will use Herefordshire ingredients, so that makes it right.

Every single restaurant that have opened at the old market is food style from some other country. We produce good food in this country is it not about time we started to show it?

More ruddy food, and the Government wonder why the British are overweight. We still have some way to go to catch the Yanks though.

If you think our food is rubbish in this country or in this city for that matter, then maybe you should not have Mr Herefordian as your user name. i am all for variety, but we are starting to get the same thing other and other again. How many peri-peri chicken outlets is there, or pizza outlets? there is one take away type thing down Widemarsh street that never opened and is now for sale,

Burgers are not British either by the way,

Something different that's not on the Old Market. Good I say. Improves choice, rather than just pub food. Unaware if Hop Pole even do food at the moment.

Well said mizza...beer in hand burgers are local, great and real local ciders and beers to jump into the equation too...to be honest the selection is hereford is great for a treat dining out, as for me, I am not a chain man, but everyone is entitled to select what they eat, no need for drama. I was once pessimistic over he new shopping/food complex but over the last few weeks I think it's just what hereford happy.
