AYMESTREY FETE – Preparations are well advanced for Aymestrey’s annual fete which takes place on July 19. There is a change of venue this year and it will take place on the meadows of Yatton Court, by permission of Mr and Mrs Hurcomb. All car access will be through the top gate by the pull-in at the pools and those arriving on foot can access the field by the lodge house. The start time is 1pm and there will be all the usual stalls: raffle, bric-a- brac, produce stall, bottle stall, bowling for a pig, coconut shy etc.
The fun dog show, children’s games and tug of war will be taking place in the arena. Don’t forget your entries for the produce competition which will close for entries at 1.30pm. Stall holders are asked once again if they can turn up a bit earlier to help put up their allocated gazebos.
Contributions to any of the stalls (books, jigsaws, games, tombola, bottles, bric-a-brac, cakes) will be much appreciated and can be organised through Ken Holland 01568 770 367 or Meg Thorpe 01568 780 384. Organisers need people to help on the day before the fete when they shall be setting up the larger marquees so volunteers are asked to meet at 10am at the parish hall on July 18 (or later down on the meadow).

PARISH COUNCIL – A meeting of Bishopstone Group Parish Council will take place tonight at the New Bridge Community Centre, Bridge Sollars, at 7.30pm.

BODENHAM LAKE – A Friends of Bodenham Lake Group has been formed to counter the threat to the lake following Herefordshire Council’s determination to end its responsibility for the facility as a cost-cutting measure. The inaugural meeting was standing room only as around 50 members of the public came to raise their concerns and to hear about possible futures for this local beauty spot which is home to a variety of wildlife and flora.
The Friends Group aims to ensure that Bodenham Lake remains in perpetuity as an open access nature reserve for people and for wildlife. There are more details at the Bodenham Lake facebook page, www.facebook.com/bodenhamlake.

100 CLUB, JULY DRAW RESULTS – The Friends of St Andrew 100 Club draw took place in the Red Lion Inn on July 3. It was drawn by Helen Pilkington. First prize of £50 was won by Patrick and Kath Dyke with ticket number 100. Second prize of £25 was won by Dave Morgan with ticket number 12. Third prize of £15 was won by Doris Howell with ticket number 60. The winner of the In It To Win It prize of £10 was Mike Taylor. COFFEE, CAKE AND MARKET – There will be a coffee morning in Bredwardine village hall tomorrow from 10am until noon. This is a chance to meet up with old and new friends over coffee and cake.
Included in the market are a number of stalls selling fresh vegetables, home-baked cakes, jams and chutneys and we have regular visits from Noggins a local pork butcher.

HEREFORD COMMUNITY LARDER – The Community Larder is Hereford’s Food Bank and provides bags of food to those in urgent need. Every week this organization gives emergency food parcels to families who find themselves in serious and sudden hardship.

FETE – This year, Breinton’s fete in aid of St Michael’s Church will be held at Breinton House from 2pm- 5pm on Sunday. Also there is the front garden-only competition for residents of Innesfield, which can be for the garden, and/or tubs, baskets etc.

PUB NIGHT WITH PUB GRUB AND PUB GAMES – The village doesn’t have a pub but that doesn’t stop them holding a pub night. Do come along to the pub night on July 18, at 7.30 pm in the “local” (aka Eaton Bishop Village Hall), there will be traditional pub games, such as darts, quoits, dominoes, etc along with a two-course supper, bar and raffle. All funds raised will contribute towards the maintenance of the church.
SUMMER FETE AT THE WHITE HOUSE – As last year’s summer fete was so successful, organisers are going to have another this year. August 30 is the date, commencing at 12.30pm.
Come along (free entry) and take part in the many games such as skittles, nearest to whisky, golf and browse the plant, cake, produce, toy and white elephant stalls. Bring the dog and enter the fun dog show, dress up the children for the fancy dress competition and participate in the garden treasure hunt. There will be music, military vehicles, classic cars, donkeys – something for everyone. And throughout the afternoon, barbecued food, cream teas, ice creams and a bar will be available. All proceeds will be divided between Eaton Bishop Village Hall and the church.
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – We have reached the stage of compiling the first draft, which will then be sent out to everyone in the parish for further consultation.
However, before then there is going to be a further opportunity to have your say about what goes into the plan. We will be holding a drop-in public meeting on Tuesday at the Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall, from 3.30pm until 8pm.

PARISH COUNCIL – The June meeting was held in St Michaels Hall with Councillor Mrs J Webb in the chair, also present Hereford councillor Graham Powell, community support officer Fiona Witcher, Mr M Carr, the clerk and seven members of the public.
In the open forum a burnt- out rubbish bin in the recreation ground was noted. Also potholes and worn road markings in the school lane were reported. In his report Cllr Powell gave details of the core strategy, highway works, grass cutting and super-fast broadband.
The parish council has been successful in their attempt to commence plans to purchase the former Roman Catholic Church site. A solicitor is now needed to be appointed to carry out the conveyancing. It was agreed to accept a quotation from Gabbs solicitor to proceed with the purchase. Feasibility grants would be sought. A questionnaire would be circulating to help gain community support and be used in any grant application.
CHARITY WALK – Eleven people set out early on a dry warm day to complete the Three Castle walk in the day.
Seven managed the complete walk ably assisted by new walkers joining in for each section to keep the pace and spirits up. They were supported the whole way around by Roger and Ann Bradley and Chris Bray with Dore Community Transport Vehicle. The first section was the longest – Skenfrith Castle to White Castle, stopping for lunch by the castle gates.
Pushing onto Grosmont was a challenging leg as the hills were steep. They arrived in Grosmont wondering about the last section. Fortunately the walk to Skenfrith from Grosmont was predominantly downhill and the easiest stretch. Together with money raised by Nicky Duggan at a recent car boot we were able to reach a total of over £1,800 to be shared equally between Dore Community Transport and West Midlands Air Ambulance.
WALKING FOR HEALTH – Every Friday, starting at 10am, outside the fish and chip shop for short gentle walks around the village led by qualified leaders. For more enthusiastic walkers there will be a walk around Craswell five to six miles.
TRAIDCRAFT – Stall selling Traidcraft goods in St Michaels Hall after the 10am service on Sunday.

HEREFORD PROBUS THREE - June has been a very successful month for Hereford Probus Three, who meet every Wednesday at 10.30 at The Bunch of Carrots, Hampton Bishop.
Early in the month, Probus member, John Probert, gave a fascinating talk on A Lifetime growing Hops, and members are looking forward to visiting his farm later in the season to see the harvesting of the crop for themselves.
Visiting speaker, Robin Thorndike, presented a most interesting illustrated talk on the Herefordshire painter Brian Hatton and the month closed with the club’s annual outing, this year to Llangollen where members and their guests had the opportunity to travel into the town on the canal using the facility of an original canal barge.

ON July 19 from 3pm - 5pm, the hill-top village of Huntington, near Kington, will be celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Fete at Huntington Court, HR5 3PZ. It all began in 1954 and now in 2014, the Huntington Village Fete is more popular than ever. To celebrate the event, four of the oldest residents of the village, who were all born and bred here have been asked to open the fete.
It is known as the most traditional fete in Herefordshire, with scores of farmers meeting up with each other and their friends and families. There will be a cake stall, a WI pudding stall, jams and preserves stall, all home made. Plants are specially grown to purchase as are the strawberries and ice cream. But the home made teas are always what people look forward to, which everyone in the village prepares. When that is done, people relax and enjoy the live music and soft tones of Bandamania. With a coconut shy, old-fashioned outdoor skittles, games of quoits as children try to ring pictures of well known village people and many other games, there is fun for everyone.
To celebrate the Jubilee anniversary, in addition to this, organisers are having a 60th anniversary balloon race. There will also be a cake competition, with adults being asked to make a three-egg Victoria sponge filled with raspberry jam and sprinkled with icing sugar. Children aged from primary school Year 6 and below are being asked to make four decorated fairy cakes. There will even be a ‘human fruit machine’.
The town crier of Knighton will also be in full splendour as he announces the events. There will be a free bus from Mill Street, Kington at 2.30pm, returning at 5.15pm. RHOS MARKET GARDEN - The Rhos market garden annual open day will be on Sunday from 2pm - 6pm at Rhos-y-meirch, Knighton, LD7 1PD. This year the focus is on the living soil and the beneficial effects of earthworms. The First Radnorshire Worm Charming Championship will be running throughout the afternoon, so visitors on the day will get the chance to have a go along and try their luck at the ancient art of charming worms out of the ground.
There will also be plenty of other interesting and fun things to do for all the family including films, crafts, and plant stall. Also teas, homemade cakes and the award- winning local Skyborry Cider, and the chance to look around this thriving market garden which supplies organic fruit and vegetables to the surrounding markets, restaurants and local community.
TEME VALLEY GARDENERS - The next meeting of the Teme Valley Gardeners club will be at 7.30pm at Knucklas community Centre on Monday. The speaker will be Sheila “Woody” Nelson of Bubble House Worm Farming Enterprises. She will be talking about her family business. The title of the talk is Wormeries. The competition for the evening will be an arrangement of hosta leaves.

LINGEN FETE - Total takings on the day were just over £1500, slightly ahead of last year and the largest gross figure of all the churchyard fetes. After provision for expenses the net sum available for sharing between the village hall, the church, and the Air Ambulances is £1280, which is an extraordinarily good result.

Little Dewchurch
CHURCH WINDOW - St David’s Church Little Dewchurch is going to have its large Preedy window removed for restoration work. Its temporary replacement is to be painted by pupils of Little Dewchurch Primary School, with enthusiastic encouragement from lead teacher Andrew Richards and all staff. Their idea is the year 1914; their title ‘From war to peace’. INFORMAL AGRICULTURAL SERVICE - There have previously been some gatherings in the Bryn Barn, Longtown, which have given a special focus on farming.
August 17, 8pm, has been chosen for another event linked with the agricultural industry. It will have a harvest theme and will give the opportunity for all generations and all those interested to share their concerns and thankfulness on very many aspects of farming.

PREMBRIDGE SHOW – Preparations are progressing well for Pembridge Show on July 26.
The committee are arranging for more displays to open in the morning at 11am when the exhibit marquee closes for judging. The bar opens at 11.30am and food is available all day. Gymkhana and jumping start at 9.30am with the exhibits of small animals and chickens open at 11am. The RWH hunt will parade the hounds at lunchtime followed by the trotting races, axe men team, Paws for Thought dog display team and children’s sports. Knighton Town Band will play in the afternoon when there will a display of classic motorcycles, bee keeping craft tent and many other attractions to see as well as the traditional produce and flower marquee.

100 CLUB – The football club recently held its 100 club draw for June at The Royal British Legion Club. CARNIVAL – This year the carnival is back. It takes place on July 19 at Wentes Meadow from 1.30pm. The procession will leave John Beddoes School at 1pm and proceed up through the high street to Wentes Meadow. Floats and fancy dress are required to assemble at John Beddoes School at 12 noon for judging. GUIDED TOURS – Stapleton Castle occupies a commanding position overlooking Presteigne.
You are welcome to take a tour to private parts of the area by owners Trfor and Margaret Griffiths.
Tours last around one hour and include the ruins of the 17th century castle and the house, the mill site and a stroll through the gardens. Bookings must be made by calling 267327. Prices are £5 per person with a minimum charge of £25. Please be aware that the ruins are uneven and hilly so please wear sensible footwear. Any proceeds will be donated to the judge’s lodgings and National Gardens Scheme.

Dorstone History Society
THE Halls of the Dead dig on Dorstone Hill has started again, and will continue through July. A series of talks will be held in Dorstone Village Hall to put the finds in context.
Talk one will be tomorrow at 7.30pm entitled From Dorstone Hill to Stonehenge: setting the south-west Herefordshire Neolithic in a Salisbury Plain context’ by Professor Julian Thomas, University of Manchester.
Talk two will be Thursday, July 17 at 7.30pm entitled Herefordshire in the Fourth and Third Millennia BC: Neolithic settlement, new horizons by Dr Keith Ray, Nexus Heritage, Rotherwas, Hereford.
Talk three will be on July 25 at 7.30pm entitled The Dorstone Hill excavations, July 2014: fresh results and new perspectives by Professor Julian Thomas and Dr Keith Ray.

1st Ewyas Harold Scout Group Cubs and Beavers
THE Cubs and Beavers of the 1st Ewyas Harold Scout Group would like to thank the many local people who have supported them through their second successful year since being founded in September 2012. In particular, we would like to thank Ewyas Harold Fire Service, Golden Valley Local Policing Team, Longtown Mountain rescue, Jan Lucas- Scudamore (Kentchurch Court) and the churchwardens from St Michael’s Church, Ewyas Harold and from Dore Abbey.
Herefordshire Health Service Retirement Fellowship
THE next meeting for the Herefordshire Health Services Retirement Fellowship (HHSRF) will be held on July 21 at 2pm in the St John’s Methodist Hall, St Owen Street, Hereford. The guest speaker this month is Mrs Carole Dowding who will be giving her presentation on Gardening with a Husband. Carole’s talk promises to be of special interest for those who have experienced gardening with men and /or husbands.
The next outing is a River Walk starting from the Castle Green, on Thursday, July 17 at 10.45am, followed by lunch at the Spread Eagle, Hereford.
Please note a diary date: Following the normal meeting on August 18 they are holding a Blooming Great Tea Party in support of Marie Curie Nurses at 3pm in the St John’s Hall. The money raised from our fundraising tea party will help the Marie Curie Nurses provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their homes. They are getting together with a warm welcome for their members, friends and their families, to enjoy lots of lovely sandwiches, scones with fresh cream and strawberries, and home-made cakes so, please come along everyone and join in the fun – make time for tea at 3pm.

IAM Herefordshire
IAM Herefordshire are running two younger driver days for 17-30 year olds this summer, the first on July 20 in Tarrington and the other at Much Birch on August 17.
Here’s your opportunity to get sound, common-sense advice and learn advanced driving techniques from the experts.
Hosted by their younger drivers, these sessions will give you a chance to find out how good you are on paper, on computer and on the road. You’ll learn how to drive more safely and economically, and also how to avoid hazards and prevent accidents. You can drop in between 10am and 4pm and it’s free – but if you would like an assessment drive – please remember to bring your current, complete driving licence, insurance document and current MOT (if your car needs one). And bring your glasses if you need them.

Phoenix Club
THE Phoenix Club meets in the skittle alley at the Herdsman for bingo on Friday afternoons at 2.20pm, finishing at around 4pm.
The club also runs coach trips to various places of interest during the year which includes the Birmingham Hippodrome for the Christmas pantomime. You are welcome to come on a Friday to play bingo and to meet up and chat with members before deciding on whether to become a member.
