A TEAM of cyclists were this week due to complete the ride of their lives in support of a county charity.

Leaving Hereford on Monday June 30, the group of six set off to John o' Groats in Scotland.

From there they cycled more than 900 miles to Land's End in order to raise money for the ELY Memorial Fund.

The charity was set up in memory of Emma Louise Young (E.L.Y.) who tragically died in September 2010 after she was involved in a road traffic collision.

It offers a one-off payment towards funeral costs for families in Herefordshire if they lose a son or daughter aged between 17 to 25 in a similar tragedy.

Angela Tyler, Emma's mum and charity founder, said on Sunday: "It's been an eventful four days for the six cyclists – Colin Headland, Dale Morris, Lee Simpson, Howard Robinson, Steve Greening and Byron Dermody.

"They have had to contend with wind and rain, lack of phone signal, poor sleep, wet clothes and tents.

"It has been difficult for them to keep us informed where they have been but we were all relieved to see them come back into Hereford on Saturday.

"Family and friends were there to greet them and emotions were running high – it was lovely to see them.

"Food and drinks welcomed them in the city sports club where they talked about the generosity and warm wishes of people they met travelling from John o' Groats."

The team were treated to bacon rolls, cooked by the ELY Committee, while they sorted out kits and dried their tents out.

The following day they set off in two relay teams to cover half the distance each, expecting to arrive at Lands End on Tuesday.
