THE Mordiford Community Choir recently performed to an appreciative audience at the Mordiford Primary School 'Big Event' which was held on June 28. The event was a huge success and the choir was definitely one of the draw-cards.

The choir was started earlier in the year to coincide with the Mordiford School Reunion which was held at Holy Rood Church, Mordiford on May 17.

Tom Hughes, choir leader, is assisted by one of the school teachers, Mrs Oakley and together they bring a wealth of experience to the table.

Mrs Oakley, who is also a music teacher at Mordiford primary said "The choir has a very informal approach, although we like it to be musically correct, the main aim is to share the love of singing".

She continued "We were very hesitant at the start but the first concert that we did gave us such pleasure in enjoying singing together, that we have gone from strength to strength".

Being a part of the group has brought a variety of people together that would not otherwise share this sort of experience for example – teachers, parents, ex-pupils, members of the church and locals from the area; whether or not they have a connection with the school.

The repertoire is made up of popular songs chosen and then arranged by Tom Hughes with harmony parts giving scope for novice singers and more experienced singers.

The choir members have made many new friends and are always looking for more. If you are interested in joining, rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 7pm at the Mordiford school. The cost is £2 to cover printing of music and hire of rehearsal venue.
