THERE'S a new man gearing up to take over as president at on of the city's long-established charitable organisations.

Mike Poole, current vice president of Hereford Lions will be taking over the role of president in July.

The former local government solicitor, who has been with the Lions for three years is looking forward to his role.

The club has 54 members and was formed in Hereford in 1960, as part of an international initiative, founded by

American Insurance businessman, Melvin Jones in 1917.

He was the inspiration behind Lions Club International which has spread throughout the world.

The basic aim of the organisation is for local business clubs to use their combined acumen for the good of the community - particularly with regard to fundraising.

And Hereford Lions certainly achieve that goal.

The club runs a raft of fundraising initiatives throughout the year - including a Santa's Grotto at Wyevale Nurseries, which raised £6,500 last December.

And most recently the Lions supported the newly formed 23rd Hereford Guides, a group associated with Barrs Court School in Hereford.

The group gives pupils with special educational needs the chance to experience the enjoyment of being in the Guides.

The club presented the Guides with £1,000 toward a £4,000 trip to Disney World.
