FOR the inaugural river festival, Ross Rotary engaged with Ross town council, John Kyrle High School(JKHS) and X-entricity to create a River Festival Children's Literacy event.

Based on a children's literacy idea from Ross Rotarian Richard Williams, Rotary obtained a grant from Ross town council and, together with its own funding, developed Richard's idea into a concept. This was suggested to JKHS and the festival organisers and the River Festival Children's Literacy Event was born.

JKHS used the concept of the river as a year long literacy project with pupils individually writing stories and illustrating them. This phase of the project culminated in a book of their work being printed and these, together with a bookmark, were presented to all the children involved at JKHS.

Leading on from this, the X-entricity Youth Theatre Group, supported by Ross Rotary, developed a theatrical performance based on the JKHS pupils' abridged stories and characters that were created within the children’s literacy project. This theatrical performance was presented to great acclaim at the Ross River Festival in the Hope and Anchor Inn meadow garden.

Ross Rotary Club meets every Monday evening 6.30pm for 7pm at the Chase Hotel. Guests and potential members are very welcome. Please visit the website at www.rossrotary.com.
