ANNUAL MEETING - The management committee of Knighton Community Centre is holding its AGM on June 23 in the Reynolds Room of the centre and is urging the public to attend and offer support. Bell Bank Club

MADDIE is in good shape and working very well.

She enjoys her walks to St Mary’s Church each week and whilst at choir recently she stood on all paws to attention when the choir master asked choristers to stand and sing.

In her doggie manner, she loves to converse with folk and most recently adopted Kevin the choir master as her uncle.

Owing to unforeseen circumstances, members have entertained themselves three afternoons last month but this was very much enjoyed as everyone participated by telling jokes, poems and tales of earlier years.

Member travelled to the Tower Hotel in Talgarth for lunch during April.

The carvery was delicious and afterwards members visited the crafts room and made some purchases. Pip and Amy were thanked for their warm welcome.

Fellow member Judith Wilkinson gave a most interesting talk on her training and duties as a nurse.

She began the route to her nursing career at the Bristol Royal Infirmary where she trained for three years.

She then spent one year travelling the south west of England carrying out blood transfusions in village halls, churches and even Horfield Prison.

Later on she completed further training to become a RSCN (Registered Sick Children’s Nurse) and then worked as a Dialysis Sister within the Renal Unit of St Helier Hospital.

Later in her career, Judith was instrumental in raising funds so that patients with renal complications could take a holiday. A very interesting and inspiring talk.

The Bell Bank Club offers an opportunity for blind and partially-sighted people to get together and support each other.

They meet every Thursday from 2pm-4pm in the parish hall, Lion Street, Hay-on-Wye.

Contact Eileen Bufton on 01497 820897.

Ledbury Rotary Club

FOOT care specialists from all over the world gathered to hear of recent advances in diabetic foot treatment at the recent 15th Diabetic Foot Conference held in the Winter Gardens in Malvern.

One of the main themes was to address the issue of decreasing the number of limbs lost through diabetes.

As a direct result of the ever- increasing number of patients suffering from diabetes throughout the world the number of lower limb amputations has increased at an alarming rate.

The problem is not only in third world countries.

Amputation rates are rapidly rising here in the UK.

Diabetic foot ulcers develop on the sole of the foot relatively painlessly and if left untreated become infected leading to gangrene and ultimately resulting in amputation of the foot or lower limb.

Ledbury Rotary Club has been recognised as one of the leading organisations to tackle these problems through its work in the Caribbean.

Rotarians John Greedy and Andrew Perry together with Martin Perry met with Dr Kristien van Acker from Belgium and Professor Vilma Urbancic- Rovan from Slovenia to discuss future visions and support for the footcare projects.

Dr van Acker is an authority on diabetic foot care and has led numerous diabetic StepbyStep training courses with Professor Urbancic including the very successful StepbyStep and ‘ TraintheFoot Trainer’ programmes held in Brazil and the Caribbean promoted by the Rotary Club of Ledbury.

At the Malvern conference Dr van Acker presented a paper in which he highlighted the huge reduction in the number of lower limb amputations caused through diabetic ulcers in the Caribbean which has come about through the Ledbury Rotary Club project.

He publicly praised Ledbury’s efforts in focusing on preventative care and health awareness.

In June 2013 a ‘ TraintheFoot Trainer’ promoted by Ledbury Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Tobago South West attracted participants from 21 Caribbean nations.

The participants have returned to their own countries and are all involved in running ‘StepbyStep’ courses training podiatric clinicians in the advanced care of the diabetic foot.
