A WOMAN and two young children remain critical with serious head injuries after Saturday's  collision betwen a car and a 4x4 in Leominster.

Four air ambulances were sent to the scene at the junction of Cholstrey Road and Monkland Road, Barons Cross, Leominster just after 1.30pm.

Both air ambulances immediately available to the county were backed up by the Welsh air ambulance and a flight from Warwickshire and Northamptonshire.

Both seriously injured children - a boy aged 6 and a one-year-old girl - were freed from the car to be treated by paramedics and flown separately to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

A woman believed to be in her 20s, who was also travelling in the back of the car, suffered serious head injuries and received emergency treatment at the scene. 

She was flown to the major trauma unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Other casualties remain under treatment. They were:

- The front seat passenger in the car, a man in his 60’s, who received emergency treatment for serious chest injuries before being flown to the QE.

- The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, treated at the scene for chest injuries and taken by land ambulance to Hereford County Hospital.

- The driver of the 4x4 vehicle, a man believed to be in his 30s, also suffered chest injuries and was treated at the scene. He, too, was transferred by land ambulance to Hereford County Hospital for further treatment.

An investigation into the collision is underway.

Emergency services describe the collision as one of the worst in the county in recent years.
