Bin bag scandal near Hereford High Town

Hereford Times: (5888337) (5888337)

OUTRAGED High Town shopkeepers have been angered by a bin bag left for days outside the front door of Hereford Town Hall while waste was strewn across the pavement this week.

Angela Siemieniuk, who owns successful nearby store Hat Trick, is among those who believe the scene is an indictment of the city’s priorities.

She said: “A picture tells a thousand words.

“And it is telling that the same day that Old Market holds a pristeen opening across town, rubbish is just left out in the street outside one of the town’s most important buildings.

“It could not have been a worse place and it could not have been a worse time.”

Ms Siemieniuk, whose store won the MP Jesse Norman’s Independent Shop of the Year, said the rubbish bag was left out for three days despite speaking to Town Hall staff.

Sharon Amery said that the rubbish had nothing to do with the Town Hall and the situation was being dealt with.

She said: “A team from Balfour Beatty have cleaned it up this morning.

“It is not the first time this has happened – there has been an issue with the family responsible we will speak to them again about how they dispose of their refuse.”

"Scandal" Come on!

Not excusing the fact that it should have been cleared away or that the person should have put it out at the right time/place. If the Council know who it is why don't they prosecute them for littering!

The sad fact is though, it's not just happening outside an historic building though it does raise how bad it's getting for rubbish
You go around any estate around Hereford or even Some parts of Leominster and Ross you will see rubbish coming out of splitting bags with food tin cans even nappies! !! All over the floor??
It's partly down to people not caring or in most cases being un-educated! !!
'But' even sader is the amount of cookers, microwaves, freezers and even fridge freezers littering our beautiful countryside

“It is not the first time this has happened – there has been an issue with the family responsible we will speak to them again about how they dispose of their refuse.” ~ If you get caught dropping a fag end in town you get an on the spot fine. So why is this 'family' just getting a few words? Apparently for the second time!

I don't know who these people are, and they may have a beef with the Council, but you just can't sling yer rubbish in the street!

That said the Council are a bit useless for leaving it there a few days. Once it's there it's got to be dealt with. Having said that they are useless with lots of stuff. Like trying to ignore the fact that grass grows. It's no good palming people off with excuses or saying they are trying to encourage butterflies and insects. No one wants to see a carpet of dead dandelions and 3 foot grass everywhere! It's basic stuff! Bins have got to be emptied and grass has got to be cut!

Surely if the Council know who is leaving this rubbish in the street why don't they consider reporting them to the Police so that proceedings can be taken against them for Fly Tipping / Litter .

Having said that ,there may be Mental issues involved with the alleged family so the Council must work out a more practical way for this family to dispose if their household rubbish.

I went into town today and the bin in the cathedral close next to the entrance to church street was over filled and people have just put rubbish on the top. I accept that this is partly due to lazy people who could not be bothered to find another bin, but it considering where it was, it looked awful.

I can see it gettiing worse to be honest, I wonder who is going to pick up the rubbish in the new centre

Balfour Beatty have announced that they will cut back on litter bin emptying as well as cutting grass three times a year. Herefordshire Councils Cabinet must be to blame as they gave BB the contract to do what they like. BB have got rid of some workers but this will mean more suits I presume.

Balfour Beatty have cut the workforce in the last couple of weeks, and these people have either left or are going, including the chap who has litter picked the city centre with a hand cart for over thirty years. He is nearly 55 years and has no hope of ever getting another job. He is going to be replaced by a sweeping machine, but they can't do the centre of Eign Gate and the centre because of all the benches etc., in the middle, so what state will the city centre become when he leaves in two months? Hereford has an air of neglect and its going to get worst.

I have it on good authority as above grasscutting only 3 times a year and NO flowers on the roundabouts or in the borders including Victoria Street. What a welcome to new visitors to the new shopping complex let alone the city as a tourist attraction.

I know these people that put bags there, they are my neighbors from Flat 2, 18 St. Owen street. All started with them not realizing that they have to put their bags outside, just at rubbish removing day. We even have put a notice for them with the dates and all, they seem just ignores that, we even reported this to Council, but no actions were taken. after some time they seem to get bored of rubbish keep getting scattered around our door, so they started to put them at a Hall's rubbish bin. the funny thing is, they never take out their trashes at rubbish removing day, but they put them outside 3 times a week on random days, NEVER on the right day. I'm just sick dealing with jerks, and if Council don't wanna do anything, who will?

We used to have that ride along sweeper machine in town. I remember the driver used to take it down Capuchin Lane at a fair rate of knots! I also remember that there were complaints of it throwing up dust which blew into shops ... I don't think it's even a practical option these days as the centre is littered with numerous obstructions - like the shanty town of gazebo's ...
