LEDBURY people will be crossing the border into Gloucestershire, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a famous poem.

The Friends of the Dymock Poets have organised a "Return to Adlestrop" event, to celebrate the centenary of the Edward Thomas poem by the same name.

The event will take place on Tuesday, June 24, in Adlestrop Village Hall, from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

Edward Thomas, one the Dymock Poets, a group of writers that settled near Dymock just prior to the First World War, arrived in Adlestrop by train.

In fact, the steam train, as the famous poem makes clear, only stopped there "unexpectedly" for a short while, allowing the poet to observe the scene, the sky and to hear the bird-song of "Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire".

In this way, a brief experience has become a timeless moment that is recreated each time the poem is heard.

These days there is no train station; but that will not stop a train actually stopping at Adlestrop on the great day itself.

In a separate event, the Cotswold Line Promotion Group has charted a special train for the day, June 24.

It will leave Oxford at 11.28am for a 15-minute stop where Adlestrop station once was.

The poem will then be read on board.

Members of the Friends of the Dymock Poets will enjoy the sight from an adjacent field.
