FOR the first time in a long while, Edgar Street was rocking yesterday with Hereford fans believing that the Bulls can pull off the great escape.

Mostly this season has been one of bitter disappointment, as fans struggle to come to terms with mediocre results on the pitch and the constant fear of the club being wound up as it lurched from one financial crisis to the next.

All that was forgotten yesterday as nearly 2,500 fans turned out to enjoy a nail-biting cup final atmosphere as Hereford scored a 3-2 win against Alfreton Town offering the club one final chance to preserve its Skrill Premier status.

But it’s a slim chance. In order for that to happen, the Bulls have to beat Aldershot and hope that Chester fail to register a win against Salisbury City.

If Chester draw, Hereford will stay up on goal difference if the players secure three points against the Shots.

For a good half hour yesterday, Bulls fans had their heads in the hands with the realisation that their beloved team could be relegated.

Alfreton took an early lead at Edgar Street, but Hereford managed to equalise after 29 minutes.

But, with Chester beating Cambridge, only a win would do for the Bulls.

With just under 30 minutes to go, Dom Collins popped up to bullet in a header to put Hereford 2-1 up.

Hereford's fans were jubilent, with dozens racing down the Meadow End to join in the celebrations.

Then, 10 minutes later, local boy Jarrod Bowen smashed home a shot from the edge of the area to make it 3-1.

The fans have not had much to cheer about this season, but yesterday was a chance for them to enjoy a game of football, abeit if it was nervy for a large part of it.

Many stayed behind to cheer the team off the pitch.

The only downside was that Chester held onto its early lead to beat Cambridge.
Hereford do have a lifeline though – a chink of light.

A win against Aldershot on Saturday and, who knows? The Bulls' fans may just be celebrating a minor miracle.

Let’s hope so.
